Wilderkrans Wine Estate – Casual relaxed lunch

If you are looking for a venue for a casual relaxed lunch with family or friends when on a weekend getaway to the Hermanus/Overstrand area, give Wilderkrans wine estate a try.

This is what I did on Easter Saturday 2016 with my family and we all had a great food and wine experience.

The farm is located on the R43 just passed Botrivier probably +/-25 minutes outside of Hermanus.

The restaurant is named “Open” and projects a country themed farm atmosphere and  overlooks a picturess landscape scene of green fields and blue sky’s .

First thing I did when I arrived was to order a bottle of the Wilderkrans sauvignon blanc to get the party started, but unfortunately this cultivar was sold out for the season. I was offered a substitute Caresse Marine savignon blanc from thier “budget” range at a cost of R65.

This I accepted, and we all enjoyed a few bottles of this more than adequate wine with our lunch along with a complimentary tray of home baked pumpkin seed bread with paprika butter to take away any hunger pains.

Not wanting a three course meal, we all decided to go straight to the main course and not worry about starters. Four of our group had the Gourmet cheese burger, a 200gm patty with camembert cheese and onion marmalade. (R85 and R20 for sides).image

The fifth diner chose the piquant chicken burger topped with crispy bacon and cottage cheese with fresh country vegetables…..

The burgers were well recieved with lovely presentation, ample portion and pleasant tastes from the cheese and meat combination. Some were served with traditional chips and others the sweet potato chip option both hailed as a success.

The farm has many dogs running around on the lawns, one a chocolate and white collie with only three legs. This animal can run and jump walls just as easy as its four legged rivals and was a constant companion to the many kids playing on the grounds while the adults had lunch and conversation at the tables.

Moving onto the second bottle of savignon  blanc, we then ordered from the dessert menu. Again only two dishes were chosen, the lemon meringue tart with white chocolate ice cream and the chocolate brownies also with white chocolate ice cream……

Presentation of both desserts would compare to that of a five star hotel. Only one complaint, we should have had two scoops of the white chocolate ice cream, one was simply not enough as it was really the star performer of the day. Increadable tastes to complete the excellent meal.

Finish off with a freshly brewed coffee and everyone was satisfied and delighted with the experience.

Great food, great service, wonderful company, lovely wine, and many memories created with family and friends. Give this wine estate a try, for a cheque less than R800 for five diners including two bottles of wine. Can’t be bad.
